Martin Margiela archive to sell online

The famously reclusive Belgian designer, Martin Margiela, is about to open his archive to the general public - via the internet.

For the first time, more than 100 one-off Maison Martin Margiela designs, spanning the years 2005-2009, will be available to buy online on Yoox.

The collection includes some of Margiela's most conceptual, experimental and expensive creations. A proponent of the sharp shoulder way before it became fashionable, there’s a directional white “elastic bands” jacket with peaked shoulders (£4,250) from spring/summer 2008. Other highlights include a disco ball top (£5,270), which wouldn’t look out of place on experimental dresser, Lady Gaga, and the infamous “wigs jacket” (£5,303) from autumn/winter 2008, which took an eye-popping 51 hours to make.

Margiela is regarded as fashion's "Man of Mystery". He has never granted an interview - he has been known to answer questions by fax; been photographed; or taken the customary post-show bow, leading some to question if he truly exists. He founded Maison Martin Margiela in 1988 and has been challenging the intellect of fashion analysts with his radical creations ever since.

His work is often the subject of exhibitions (including SHOWstudio’s Fashion Revolution, showing until December 20, at Somerset House). If you can afford to pay the hefty prices, consider yourself the lucky owner of treasured, future museum pieces.
